This refers to cancer that develops in any part that makes up the oral cavity. It can occur on the lips, tongue, gums, cheeks, roof, and floor of the mouth. Here are some of the most common:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Using Tobacco Products:<\/strong> Smoking cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, and the use of smokeless or chewing tobacco is one of the most well-known risks of oral cancer. In fact, about 90% of people who have oral cancer use tobacco products.<\/li><li><strong>Heavy Alcohol Use:<\/strong> If you are a heavy drinker, you are much more likely to be diagnosed with oral cancer. If you also use tobacco, this is even higher.<\/li><li><strong>Sun Exposure:<\/strong> Excessive sun exposure to the lips increases the risk of oral cancer.<\/li><li><strong>Human Papillomavirus (HPV):<\/strong> This type of cancer can be linked to HPV. It is generally found in the back of the throat, the base of the tongue, and in the tonsils.<\/li><li><strong>Being Older Than 45:<\/strong> This type of cancer can develop at any age, but people who are older than 45 have a higher risk.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are the Signs of Oral Cancer?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms are different for everyone, but here are some of the most common signs that people experience:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Mouth sores<\/li><li>White or red patches<\/li><li>Swelling of the neck<\/li><li>Difficulty swallowing or chewing<\/li><li>Weight loss<\/li><li>Halitosis (bad breath)<\/li><li>Lump in the cheek<\/li><li>Difficulty moving jaw or tongue<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can You Minimize Your Risk of Oral Cancer?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, cancers of the mouth are fairly preventable. Here are a few ways that you can reduce your risk:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Quit using tobacco products<\/li><li>Eat a balanced diet<\/li><li>Practice excellent oral hygiene<\/li><li>Only drink alcohol in moderation<\/li><li>Limit sun exposure<\/li><li>Use an SPF lip balm<\/li><li>If you have dentures, remove them every night and clean them daily.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Oral cancer can be deadly, but by taking the steps listed above, you can lower your risk of the disease.
