Is it true that unused dental insurance benefits roll over at the end of the year? Although many people think so, the answer is actually no. And, unfortunately, that common myth can cost you hundreds every year! But don’t worry – you still have time to use (instead of lose) your benefits in 2019. It’s helpful to start by learning a few tips and tricks, so keep reading to find out what services are typically covered and how to take advantage of your plan. With this information, you’ll not only improve your oral health, but you’ll do it as affordably as possible.

What Does Dental Insurance Cover?

Dental insurance plans can vary quite a bit, so make sure to check your individual benefits (or ask a dentist for clarification). With that said, here’s how insurance commonly covers different types of dental work:

  • Preventive care – Checkups, cleanings, and X-rays are typically covered at 80%-100%. Also, see if your plan covers sealants and fluoride treatments (but find out if there’s an age limit.)
  • Basic dental work – Basic procedures like dental fillings are often covered at 80%.
  • Major dental work – More involved procedures like dental crowns, root canals, and bridges are commonly covered at 50%.

Also, it’s important to note that your insurance plan is geared towards prevention. Insurance companies know that people who get routine care typically need less dental work than those who don’t, so they make these visits essentially free. At the very least, you and your family should be scheduling checkups and cleanings to prevent cavities, gum disease, and dental emergencies – at little to no cost to you.

How To Get the Most From Dental Insurance

Most plans expire on December 31st so, first and foremost, schedule your appointments before then. In fact, the earlier, the better: If you get a checkup and find that you need additional treatment, you’ll have time to use your 2019 benefits to cover it before they’re gone.

Also, keep in mind that the average annual maximum (the amount your plan will pay for dental work for the year) is between $700 and $1,500. This is quite a bit of money that can go towards improving your oral health, so be sure to ask a dentist for help maximizing your benefits. In some cases, they can strategically schedule your treatment or recommend getting a preventive service like a custom-made nightguard.

Taking great care of your smile is a great way to start 2020 off on the right foot. By using your dental insurance benefits before they’re gone, you’ll have a healthier smile and a happier wallet!
